The Charlotte Checkers, who played their first-ever game at what is now called Bojangles’ Coliseum in 1956, are the top affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. Since the team joined the American Hockey League in 2010, 40 different Checkers players have gone on to play in the NHL, resulting in nearly 1,400 games played. The Checkers are committed to serving the Charlotte community, contributing $4 million in cash and in-kind donations since Michael Kahn took ownership of the team in 2006.
